Every state writes its own rules
Cannabis is legal at the state level, not federal, which means 30+ different label compliance regimes. Below is a starter cheat sheet. Always verify against your state's most recent regulator publication — the rules change quarterly. This is a printer's field guide, not legal advice.
California (BCC + DPH)
Universal cannabis symbol on the primary panel. THC/CBD content per serving AND per package. Manufacturer name, address, license number. Government warning verbatim. Allergen statement if edible. Batch/lot number. UID barcode for METRC tracking.
Colorado (MED)
Universal symbol (red diamond). Potency per package AND per serving. Contents list, allergens, use-by date, batch number, license number, and the state-mandated warning statement. Child-resistant packaging is required — the label must survive multiple opens.
Michigan (CRA)
State-specific green triangle 'THC' symbol. Total THC per package. Manufacturer license number, product identifier, activation time for edibles, and a 'keep out of reach of children' warning. Michigan requires font sizes ≥ 6pt for warnings.
Massachusetts, New York, Illinois, Oregon, Washington
All require universal symbols but with regionally different iconography. All require batch, license, and warning statements. New York and Illinois additionally require QR-linked lab results. Oregon requires 'grown in Oregon' labeling with the county on-package for outdoor cultivation.
